July 8, 2014 – Office of Information Technology (OIT) staff recently came together to celebrate the department’s sixth annual Hot Dogs for Hunger event at Johnson Park on June 25.
What began in 2009 as a simple idea to host an afternoon summer barbecue has grown into one of the university’s most successful departmental RAH fundraisers to date. Hot Dogs for Hunger brings together OIT staff from all Rutgers campuses for an afternoon teambuilding and fundraising event to support local food pantries, soup kitchens, and food banks. Hot dogs, beverages, and sides are purchased and prepared by members of the OIT executive staff and attendees are invited to participate in the cookout by donating a nonperishable food item or contributing a monetary contribution to Rutgers Against Hunger.
This year, approximately 100 OIT staff members helped collect 825 lbs. of food and $575 in monetary donations. Since 2009, the Office of Information Technology has collected food donations totaling 4,961 lbs. and monetary donations totaling $2,916.00.
Food and money collected through this year’s event will benefit the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP), a RAH partner agency based in Somerville. The donations will support SHIP programs and services that increase the Somerset County and surrounding regions’ capacity to respond to the needs of the poor and working poor. On behalf of Rutgers Against Hunger and the agencies we serve, THANK YOU to the Office of Information Technology for your continued support and generosity!
