OIT Celebrates 6th Annual Hot Dogs for Hunger

Oitrah6

July 8, 2014 – Office of Information Technology (OIT) staff recently came together to celebrate the department’s sixth annual Hot Dogs for Hunger event at Johnson Park on June 25.

What began in 2009 as a simple idea to host an afternoon summer barbecue has grown into one of the university’s most successful departmental RAH fundraisers to date. Hot Dogs for Hunger brings together OIT staff from all Rutgers campuses for an afternoon teambuilding and fundraising event to support local food pantries, soup kitchens, and food banks. Hot dogs, beverages, and sides are purchased and prepared by members of the OIT executive staff and attendees are invited to participate in the cookout by donating a nonperishable food item or contributing a monetary contribution to Rutgers Against Hunger.

This year, approximately 100 OIT staff members helped collect 825 lbs. of food and $575 in monetary donations. Since 2009, the Office of Information Technology has collected food donations totaling 4,961 lbs. and monetary donations totaling $2,916.00.

Food and money collected through this year’s event will benefit the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP), a RAH partner agency based in Somerville. The donations will support SHIP programs and services that increase the Somerset County and surrounding regions’ capacity to respond to the needs of the poor and working poor. For more information on SHIP, click here.

On behalf of Rutgers Against Hunger and the agencies we serve, THANK YOU to the Office of Information Technology for your continued support and generosity!

**UPDATE**: Captions will now be accepted until TUESDAY, 4/29 @ 5pm.  Voting will run from TUESDAY, 4/29 @ 5pm until WEDNESDAY, 4/30 @ 5pm.  PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!  Thank you! 🙂

The Livingston Computing Center recently had a visitor come by the lab — none other than our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man!  The picture above was the view from the Supervisors’ Office.

We have been having a difficult time coming up with a good caption for the picture of our visiting superhero, so we figured we would hold a caption contest and get some help from all of you!

And the winner will get a prize, courtesy of New Brunswick Computing Services — a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card!

Here are the rules:

  • Captions must be received by Friday, 4/25 @ 5pm
  • Captions must be from a Rutgers student, faculty or staff member
  • Captions must be in good taste (of course)
  • Captions may be submitted in 2 ways
  1. On Facebook: You must “Like” the @RutgersIT Facebook page, must use the hashtag #RUOITSpidey), must post caption in the comments of the image post
  2. On Twitter: You must follow @RutgersIT on Twitter, must tweet the caption to @RutgersIT using the hashtag we set #RUOITSpidey

After the deadline, we will ask the people to help us find the top captions to help us decide the winner.  Voting will begin Monday, 4/28 @ 1pm, and end on Wednesday, 4/30 @ 1pm.

Again, there are two ways to help:

  1. On Facebook, we will ask people to “Like” their favorite captions on the Facebook post ;
  2. On Twitter, we will ask people to re-tweet & favorite the caption they like best.

The ones with the most Likes/RTs & Favorites will rise to the top, and we will choose a winner from this final group of captions.

Again, the winner will get a prize, courtesy of New Brunswick Computing Services — a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card!

We will announce the winner of the OIT #RUOITSpidey Caption Contest by Thursday, 5/1 @ 4pm.

We’re looking forward to some great captions!  Good luck!

OIT is @RUDanceMarathon This Weekend! #RUDM2014

rudm2013

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is helping out all weekend long during the Rutgers Dance Marathon charity event which is held yearly to support the Embrace Kids Foundation.   This is a fun and worthy event that hundreds of Rutgers students participate in each year.  For more on the event, click here.

Over the last five years, over 150 members of our staff (student and full-time staff) have volunteered their time to help out during Dance Marathon.  This year the marathon is taking place throughout this weekend (Saturday and Sunday – April 5th and Apri 6th) at the RAC on Livingston Campus.

We will set up a bank of computers where those who are participating in RU Dance Marathon can get online to check their email, make song requests and add entries to the marathon’s blog.  They can also use the built-in webcams to take pictures and post them on the RU Dance Marathon Facebook Page.  Our staff will be on hand to assist in making sure this equipment is running smoothly and to help anyone having trouble using the computers.

Once again, we are looking forward to helping out for the sixth consecutive year! FTK!
